Biography:

On April 21, 1948, Anselmo Barnabé Rodrigues, Mestre Sapo, was born. In 1966, he passed through São Luis, together with the Aberrê quartet (M. Canjiquinha, Vitor Careca, Brasília, Sapo), on a trip that changed the history of capoeira in Maranhão. In 1967 mestre Sapo returned to São Luis to work in construction, and later in the agriculture department. In 1972, he began teaching capoeira at the Costa Rodrigues gymnasium, and then at various locations around the city. Mestre Sapo trained a generation of capoeiristas, such as Mestre Euzamor and Mestre Patinho, who preserve the lineage of Mestre Aberrê and Cajiquinha. Mestre Sapo died on Sunday, May 30, 1982, in São Luis, the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Here is our salute to the memory of the great mestre, who is still remembered today for being an excellent capoeirista.
