What is CapoeiraHub?

Welcome to CapoeiraHub — a growing community-built platform dedicated to documenting, organizing, and preserving information about Capoeira: its people, lineages, groups, and history — across styles, regions, and generations.

A Living Tradition

Capoeira has always been transmitted through people, memory, and lived experience. Much of its history exists informally: in stories, in rodas, in personal relationships, and across scattered online spaces. CapoeiraHub exists to help gather and structure that knowledge so it becomes easier to access, understand, and pass forward — without replacing real-world practice.

Gratitude & Acknowledgments

We would like to thank all mestres, mestras, contramestres, and other practitioners who have generously shared their invaluable knowledge, as well as Velhos Mestres for kindly allowing the use of its rich and carefully preserved content.

Accuracy, Respect, and Shared Knowledge

We do our utmost to present information that is accurate, respectful, and faithful to Capoeira’s living traditions. However, our knowledge is necessarily incomplete. If you notice an error, a missing connection, or have additional information to contribute, we warmly invite you to share it with us — so that together we can make the family tree more complete and more true to the living history of Capoeira.

Explore the Community & Lineages

Looking for mestres, contramestres, professores, and other graduated practitioners? You’ll find them in the Community section. Curious about lineages, ancestry, and connections between mestres? Explore the Family Tree in our Library.

An Invitation to Explore Together

Dive in, explore, and help keep Capoeira’s history alive — together.

Not Social Media

CapoeiraHub is not social media. It does not replace rodas, academies, or real-life relationships. Its purpose is to structure and preserve information that is often scattered, informal, or lost over time.

Purpose

The purpose of CapoeiraHub is to help preserve memory, lineage, and historical connections within Capoeira, while making information easier to access, understand, and pass forward.

Lineage and Family Trees

Family trees are used to document learning paths and historical relationships as they are understood and shared within the community. They are not rankings, validations, or judgments of legitimacy.

No Authority Over Titles

CapoeiraHub does not assign or decide titles. Mestre, contramestre, professor, and other designations are documented based on available sources and community input. The platform does not define who is legitimate or who holds which title.

Accuracy and Responsibility

The goal is not to claim absolute truth, but to present the most accurate and respectful information possible at a given time. All information can be reviewed, corrected, discussed, and improved.

Community-Driven

CapoeiraHub grows through contributions, dialogue, and shared responsibility. It is shaped by practitioners, groups, researchers, and elders — not by popularity, performance, or algorithms.

Free and Open

The platform is free to use and open to the Capoeira community. Its focus is preservation, visibility, and connection — not competition or promotion.

Who Is Behind CapoeiraHub?

What is CapoeiraHub?

Founder & Builder

CapoeiraHub was created and is maintained by Aleksandar Pavlovic, a practitioner of Capoeira Angola and a software developer.

Aleksandar began his Capoeira path under the supervision of Mestre Marquinho. In his early years, he trained closely with his friend and training partner Nemanja Dragojlovic (Sonero).

In 2017, he moved to New York to continue his formation directly under Mestre João Grande. During this period, he traveled extensively with Mestre João Grande, assisting him in workshops, supporting him in daily life, and helping conduct classes in the academy, including teaching in Mestre João Grande’s absence.

He also accompanied Mestre João Grande on one of his most important journeys to Angola, the birthplace of Capoeira Angola. His apelido, Rasta Chapa, was given to him by Mestre João Grande.

CapoeiraHub was created out of lived experience within Capoeira and a sense of responsibility toward preserving lineage, memory, and context for future generations.

Content Manager & Admin

Frikke van Eck, known in Capoeira as Doutor, teaches Capoeira Angola with the Grupo de Capoeira Angola Holanda in the Netherlands. Deeply committed to the art, he brings clarity, curiosity, and care into both his teaching and his engagement with the wider Capoeira community. His work reflects a strong respect for tradition, lineage, and the lived knowledge passed through rodas, relationships, and daily practice.

Within CapoeiraHub, Doutor is a key contributor, serving as a content manager and administrator of the platform. His enthusiasm, consistency, and attention to detail play an important role in maintaining and improving the quality of the information shared on the site. As an active and trusted presence behind the scenes, he helps ensure that CapoeiraHub remains accurate, respectful, and truly community-driven.

Frikke would like to thank his mestre Laercio from Filhos de Angola for his guidance and support.
