Biography:

Helio José Bastos Carneiro de Campos, known as Mestre Xaréu, is one of the most important researchers and educators of Capoeira Regional. He graduated in Physical Education from the Catholic University of Salvador (UCSAL) and specialized in Higher Education Methodology and Athletics at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Mexico. His academic career culminated in a PhD in Education from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), with his thesis "Capoeira Regional: A Escola de Mestre Bimba" (2006), a work that systematizes decades of practice, teaching and research.

Mestre Xaréu is a Capoeira Regional Master trained at Mestre Bimba's Academy, and is part of the direct lineage of the method's creator. His career has brought together capoeira, education and science, working as an adjunct professor at the Bahiana School of Medicine (EBMSP), a professor at UNEB/UAB, and an associate professor at UFBA, where he retired after contributing to the implementation and consolidation of Capoeira in the university environment, both at UFBA and UCSAL.

He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Physical Education (Chair 21) and the Geographical and Historical Institute of Bahia (IGHB), as well as leader of the CAMINHO research group at EBMSP. His works - such as Capoeira na Escola (1998) and Capoeira na Universidade (2001) - have become references for understanding capoeira as a cultural, educational and anthropological phenomenon.

His academic production highlights the pedagogy, methodology and legacy of Mestre Bimba, always linking history, corporal practice, physical education and Bahian cultural identity.
