Biography:
Mestre Orismidio Duarte began practicing capoeira in 1995 and, in 2019, received the title of Mestre at the very school where he first trained — Associação Terreiro Capoeira. Throughout his journey, he participated in cultural groups such as Maracatu Az de Ouro, Nação Fortaleza, Caravana Cultural, Afoxé Acabaca, and Grupo Raízes de Dança e Teatro.
In 2005, he moved to the Cariri region, where he began coordinating the work of Terreiro Capoeira and founded the Coletivo Terreiro Capoeira Cariri, launching the “Escola de Capoeiras” project in 2006.
A committed researcher, he is part of the Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisas em Educação, Gênero e Relações Étnico-Raciais (NEGRER – URCA). He holds a degree in Visual Arts, a specialization in African History and Culture and in Inclusive Social Archaeology, and a Master’s degree in Education, through which he investigates capoeira and its connections with education and Afro-Brazilian culture.
Beyond the roda, Mestre Orismidio maintains a blog dedicated to reflections on capoeira and the arts and runs a YouTube program titled “Conhecendo a Capoeira Cearense”. Together with Mestre Chico Ceará, he is one of the creators of the cultural initiative Virada Cultural – Intercâmbio Cultural Arte e Tradição e Terreiro Capoeira.
He has published several works over the years:
– 2017: the chronicle “Terreirada no Cariri”
– 2021: the educational material “A Arte de Educar Gingando”, selected in the municipal public funding program of Crato
– 2022: the book “A Arte de Educar Gingando – Aspectos e Contribuições da Capoeira para a Educação”, awarded in the II Prêmio Expressões Culturais Afro-Brasileiras do Ceará. That same year, he spoke at the Ceará International Book Biennial on the theme “Art, Culture, and Ancestrality in Schools: Contributions of Capoeira to the implementation of Laws 10.639/2003 and 11.645/2008.”
For eight years, he worked as an artist-educator at CCBNB Cariri. Today, he continues developing pedagogical and cultural work, understanding capoeira as an Afro-descendant manifestation and a meaningful tool for heritage education, identity, and cultural preservation.
Founded in 2006 with Orismidio's arrival — then still an instructor — Terreiro Capoeira Cariri initially operated under the supervision of Mestre Piqueno for administrative reasons. After receiving his teacher graduation and gaining full autonomy according to the group’s statutes, the Cariri nucleus became permanently under the leadership of its founder, Mestre Orismidio.
Under his guidance, Terreiro Capoeira Cariri has become an important capoeira school in the region, dedicated to promoting capoeira as culture, education, and Afro-Brazilian heritage.
