Biography:
Grandmaster Robert "Bob" Cooper holds a prestigious 10th Degree Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu, awarded to him by Florendo "Professor Vee" Visitacion. In addition to his martial arts achievements, he is also a licensed teacher, having worked as a Physical Education Teacher and Jiu Jitsu instructor in Brooklyn.
While attending New York City Community College as a part-time evening student, Bob also taught free Korean Karate lessons and Jiu Jitsu classes. His dedication to sharing his martial arts knowledge extended to the introduction of Brazilian Black Belt capoeira teachers Jelon G. Vieira and Loremil Machado to the NYC Community College. These teachers played a significant role in the production of "The Capoeiras of Bahia" in the late 1970s, thanks to Bob's efforts.
Bob's contributions to the martial arts community go beyond teaching. He wrote articles for the Arts and Sciences student newspaper, exploring topics such as the African roots of Capoeira, the oriental origins of other martial arts, and techniques for finding a good martial arts school. All of this was accomplished while maintaining a passing GPA, showcasing his commitment to both academics and martial arts.
In recognition of his impact on Capoeira, Bob received the title of Mestre in Capoeira Angola from Mestre João Grande in New York. He had the privilege of studying under Mestre João Grande for several years, recording all of his classes. As a result, Bob likely holds the largest video collection of Mestre João Grande's classes from the 1990s.
Today, Grandmaster Bob Cooper continues to teach Vee Jiu Jitsu at Mission Martial Arts Academy, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with the next generation of martial artists.
