Mestre Lua de Bobó

Biography:

Mestre Lua de Bobó, widely known simply as Mestre Lua, stands as a revered figure in the world of Capoeira Angola, embodying the spirit, tradition, and vibrancy of this art form. Born in 1950 in the coastal town of Arembepe, his journey into Capoeira Angola began early under the careful mentorship of Mestre Bobó (Milton Santos). From those formative years, Mestre Lua absorbed not only the techniques of the game but also the values of dedication, courage, and the profound responsibility of passing knowledge to future generations.

His path as a capoeirista is marked by a deep commitment to preserving the traditions of Capoeira Angola while sharing its energy both locally and internationally. The early experiences at the Academia de Capoeira Angola Cinco Estrelas were instrumental in shaping his understanding of the art, laying the foundation for his evolution as a master and leader. In 1987, Mestre Lua received his master’s degree from Mestre Bobó at the Vasco da Gama club in Dique do Tororó—a milestone that affirmed his mastery and inspired him to establish the Grupo de Capoeira Angola Menino de Arembepe (GCAMA).

The passing of Mestre Bobó in the 1990s was a poignant moment, yet it strengthened Mestre Lua’s resolve to carry forward the Angolan energy and ethos of Capoeira Angola. His dedication led to the creation of a dedicated space for GCAMA in Arembepe, nurturing the art where it first ignited his passion. In 2005, the group’s headquarters officially opened, providing a permanent home for the community and ensuring that the teachings of Capoeira Angola would thrive for generations to come.

Beyond his organizational achievements, Mestre Lua has profoundly shaped the lives of countless capoeiristas, including his children Eri and Ari, instilling in them the same devotion and reverence for the art. His influence transcends borders, with numerous international workshops and performances bringing Capoeira Angola to audiences worldwide, earning him recognition and respect far beyond Brazil.
