Biography:

Mestre Jurandir Nascimento is a pivotal figure in the world of Capoeira Angola, dedicating over three decades to its preservation and promotion. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he began his journey in Capoeira Angola in 1970 and quickly rose to prominence as one of the pioneers of the Grupo de Capoeira Angola Pelourinho (GCAP). His influence expanded further when he founded the N’GOLO Angola group in Minas Gerais in 1990, which later became affiliated with the International Capoeira Angola Foundation (ICAF).

Under Mestre Jurandir’s leadership, ICAF has grown into the largest Capoeira Angola organization worldwide, fostering chapters across the globe, including in the US, Brazil, Mozambique, and beyond. In 1995, alongside Mestre Cobra Mansa and Mestre Valmir Damasceno, he co-founded FICA (Fundaçao Internacional de Capoeira de Angola) to preserve and research Capoeira Angola's rich heritage. This organization plays a vital role in hosting conferences, workshops, and public demonstrations to raise awareness of Afro-Brazilian culture and the historical significance of Capoeira.

Mestre Jurandir’s commitment extends beyond teaching and performing. He has organized numerous events aimed at educating children and young adults about Capoeira Angola, emphasizing its cultural importance through music, movement, and historical narratives. His efforts include workshops at universities across the US and collaborations with educational projects in Brazil, such as the Nucleus of Pedagogic Support and projects for differently-abled children.
