Biography:
Jorge Egídio dos Santos, known as Jogo de Dentro, was born in Alagoinhas on April 6, 1965. His journey into Capoeira Angola began in 1982 at the Forte Santo Antônio in Salvador, BA, where he joined the Academia do Mestre João Pequeno de Pastinha.
A year after starting, he was baptized by Mestre João Grande, who gave him the nickname Jogo de Dentro. By 1986, he had earned his first degree as a teacher of Capoeira Angola. Embracing his new responsibility, he began teaching at Mestre João Pequeno’s academy on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, all while working at a supermarket—a job he held for five years.
In 1989, Jorge made a bold decision to leave his job and dedicate himself fully to Capoeira Angola. He continued his work with Mestre João Pequeno, striving to organize the academy and ensure that his master's teachings would endure. However, he faced significant challenges, including conflicts with students who lacked commitment to the discipline and vision he was trying to instill.
In 1990, during an event on September 23, Jorge received the title of Contra-Mestre, acknowledging his dedication to the growth and development of Capoeira Angola. Later that year, when Mestre João Grande traveled to the United States, he left behind a project at the Teatro Miguel Santana in Pelourinho, which Jorge took it upon himself to continue.
Despite the challenges, including resistance from students who questioned his methods, Jorge remained steadfast. He worked to carry on the work initiated by Mestre João Grande, pushing through the difficulties and staying true to the teachings of his master.
As time passed, some students remained while others left. The group initially went by the name “Herança de Pastinha” but was later changed to “Filhos de João Pequeno and João Grande”, reflecting Jorge’s roots with Mestre João Pequeno and the students’ connections to Mestre João Grande. Eventually, due to internal conflicts and tension within the academy, the group changed its name again to “Semente do Jogo de Angola”.
The group is now made up of individuals who believe in and are committed to the true essence of Capoeira Angola, with members spread across the world. Jorge officially became a Mestre of Capoeira Angola on February 27, 1994, after being trained by Mestre João Pequeno.
Capoeira Angola has been his constant companion throughout his life. Jorge always shares this philosophy with his students, emphasizing the importance of humility and the preservation of Capoeira Angola’s roots. He advises: “Make Capoeira Angola your life’s purpose, rescue our roots, and do not let it be reduced to a competitive fight. We must honor this legacy, and I will carry it until the end of my life.”
His commitment to Capoeira Angola and its philosophy continues to inspire and shape the future of this vital art form.
