Mestre Camisa

Biography:

Mestre Camisa, born José Tadeu Carneiro Cardoso on October 28th, 1955, in Jacobina, Bahia, is one of the most influential figures in the world of Capoeira. He is widely known for founding ABADÁ-Capoeira in 1988, an organization that has played a significant role in spreading and formalizing the practice of Capoeira worldwide. Mestre Camisa’s contributions to the art, his dedication to preserving its traditions, and his unique approach to teaching have solidified his legacy as a leading Mestre in the Capoeira community.

Mestre Camisa’s Capoeira journey began at the age of seven, when he was introduced to the art form by his older brother, Mestre Camisa Roxa. Inspired by his brother, who was a student of Mestre Bimba, Camisa enrolled in an academy under Mestre Bimba’s guidance. His early years of training laid the foundation for what would become an extraordinary career in Capoeira.

In the early 1970s, Mestre Camisa joined his brother on a year-long tour of Brazil with the folkloric dance company Olodum Maré. While the troupe traveled throughout Brazil and Europe, Camisa remained in Rio de Janeiro, where he began teaching Capoeira. It was during this time that he recognized the need for a structured approach to teaching Capoeira. He envisioned creating a space where students could train, discuss techniques, and develop the philosophy of Capoeira, which led to the formation of ABADÁ-Capoeira.

Throughout the 1980s, Mestre Camisa developed his own unique style of Capoeira, blending the traditions of Mestre Bimba with his personal touch. His focus on improving the martial aspect of Capoeira set him apart, and he became known for his precision and creativity in the roda. Under his leadership, ABADÁ-Capoeira grew to become one of the most prominent Capoeira organizations in the world, with branches in several countries.

One of Mestre Camisa’s most significant achievements is the creation of the Centro Educacional Mestre Bimba (CEMB) in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro, an educational and training center built to honor Mestre Bimba’s legacy. CEMB offers a wide range of activities, including Capoeira training, ecological hikes, and cultural demonstrations, all aimed at promoting both Capoeira and environmental preservation.

Mestre Camisa’s impact extends beyond teaching and training. He has been a strong advocate for social justice, using Capoeira as a tool to address issues such as racism, social inequality, and the empowerment of youth. His work continues to inspire new generations of Capoeiristas worldwide, and his leadership of ABADÁ-Capoeira has ensured that his vision for Capoeira—one that blends tradition with innovation—remains alive and thriving.

Through his dedication to Capoeira, Mestre Camisa has become a symbol of strength, discipline, and cultural pride, cementing his place as one of the greatest Capoeira masters in history.
