Biography:

Mestre Poloca, born Paulo Barreto, is a highly respected figure in Capoeira Angola and a dedicated educator. Currently a staff member at the Federal University of Bahia, he combines his passion for Capoeira with a strong focus on teaching and engaging with local communities, particularly children. His work emphasizes the importance of education and Capoeira in the development of young people, using the art form to instill discipline, respect, and cultural awareness.

Mestre Poloca’s Capoeira journey began in 1983 when he started training with Grupo de Capoeira Angola Pelourinho (GCAP) in Salvador, Bahia. Under the guidance of Mestres Moraes, Cobra Mansa, and João Grande, he quickly rose through the ranks and was recognized as a contramestre. His deep knowledge of Capoeira and his dedication to its philosophy and practice have made him an influential figure in the Capoeira Angola community.

Mestre Poloca’s talent extends beyond teaching adults—he has a natural ability to connect with children and has conducted numerous workshops, particularly in Japan. He first visited Japan in 2014 and has returned multiple times, including in 2016 and 2018, to lead workshops in Kyoto and Tokyo. His engaging approach has made him a favorite among young learners, furthering the spread of Capoeira Angola internationally.

Through his work at the Federal University of Bahia and his international teaching, Mestre Poloca continues to make a lasting impact on both the academic world and the global Capoeira community.
