Contra-Mestre Raphael Souza

Biography:

Contra Mestre Raphael Souza is a remarkable figure in the world of Capoeira, known for his exceptional skill, fluid movements, and joyful spirit. From an early age, Raphael’s journey in Capoeira began in an extraordinary way—he literally started training while still in his mother's womb! His mother, a dedicated student of Mestre João Pequeno, passed on her love for Capoeira to Raphael long before he could walk. Growing up in this environment, Raphael was destined to follow the path of Capoeira, and he did so with great passion and dedication.

He began his formal Capoeira training as a young child, and his early education was shaped by some of the most respected figures in Capoeira. Mestre Poloca, Mestra Janja, and Mestra Paulinha all played key roles in his development, guiding him through the traditional teachings and the spiritual depth of Capoeira. Raphael trained with the Nzinga Group, a well-regarded Capoeira Angola group, where he further honed his skills and became known for his unique and beautiful style.

Raphael’s game is a sight to behold—fluid, graceful, and full of ease. He is celebrated for his acrobatic ability, effortlessly moving from low, grounded movements to impressive high handstands, combining agility and strength in every move. His fluidity and precision make his Capoeira game not only effective but also aesthetically captivating, with each movement flowing seamlessly into the next.

In recognition of his dedication, talent, and commitment to the art, Mestra Janja promoted Raphael to the rank of Contra Mestre. This promotion is a testament to his mastery of Capoeira and his deep understanding of its cultural significance.

Beyond his technical abilities, Raphael is also known for his great spirit and infectious happiness. His positive energy and joy in practice are palpable, and he is admired by his peers for the light and warmth he brings to the roda. Raphael's enthusiasm for Capoeira, combined with his natural talent and deep-rooted love for the art, make him not only a respected Contra Mestre but also a beloved figure in the Capoeira community.

Additionally, Raphael spent two years working as Mestre João Grande's personal aide. During this time, he had the invaluable opportunity to learn directly from Mestre João Grande, one of the most influential figures in Capoeira today. Raphael also trained at Mestre João Grande’s academy in New York, where he continued to deepen his understanding of Capoeira under the mentorship of one of its most revered masters.

With a foundation built on the wisdom of Mestre João Pequeno, the guidance of Mestra Janja, and the teachings of Mestre João Grande, Raphael Souza continues to inspire the next generation of Capoeiristas. He demonstrates that Capoeira is not only a martial art but also a means of personal expression, joy, and cultural connection.
